Happy Mother’s Day

I remember once you told me not to
bother. So I didn’t, then you got mad.

I remember putting the effort in
after that, which seemed easier back then.

I remember when I became a mum
it changed. I couldn’t find the words to say.

I remember perusing the cards, but, they were all too sickly sweet and full of lies.

I remember wondering if I’d change, that maybe one day it could be true for us.

Then, two years ago it did change when I spoke my truth. Our relationship ended.

Today I’m choosing to let the past go. This is my day to celebrate my girls.

Today I am choosing to be grateful
for the chance to become a mother

Today I’m choosing to thank the women
I know and love who nurture and support me.

Today I’m choosing to reaffirm my vow
to be the best mother that I can be.

Today and everyday I am choosing to be open, honest and show my girls

Unconditional love.

For my Mum

Do you remember telling us stories
and teaching us to spell?
Working through our problems
in maths (and life as well).
Do you remember baking with us
and nursing our fevered brows?
Demonstrating love and kindness
without which we’d be nothing now.
Guiding us along the treacherous path
running through the moral maze.
Mum, without you we’d be lost;
you’ve been with us at each phase.
Now we’re grown, we’ve flown the nest
but you’re always in our hearts.
Distance can’t dampen our love
or keep our family apart.
Although it’s only Mother’s Day
once a year, I truly hope you know
how we really love you all year round,
come wind or rain or shine or snow.

For my Mum.
